Design
There's that moment when you forget to close the top of your water bottle at the gym. A time when you just forgot where you placed your protein shaker.
AFIXT was born out of the frustration with cluttered workout spaces and keeping things front and center during your trip to the gym.
Opportunity
Analysis
We looked at numerous bottles of all shapes and sizes. This helped us identify the correct band circumference and elasticity as well as the amount of weight the product would be required to hold. Identifying the correct magnet was the first step in understanding how we would mount the magnet to the bottle.
Next we considered various use and care situations for rigorous prototyping and testing. We concluded that an elastic fabric strap combined with a plastic housing was the best solution to mounting the magnet to the bottle.
When looking at all the magnet options we had a number of possible shapes that would hold the required weight. The shape of the plastic housing was critical to how the magnet would function on the bottle. The final shape was informed by both function and aesthetic, working together to reach the target market and fulfill our client's vision.
Concept Development
Testing Concepts
After ideation, we prototyped and tested several viable concepts. The final design features a curved front profile, enabling it to be rocked away from the surface it is attached to for easy removal.
Prototyping & Pre-Production
Once we had the final concept, the next step was CAD modeling and manufacturing.
Jacob collaborated with engineers and met with an overseas manufacturer to determine the best design for the model. This included implementing proper draft angles and overcoming manufacturing challenges to preserve the original design intent.
Jacob also drafted utility and design patents for the client to be patent pending at product launch.
Design for Manufacturing
AFIXT was launched and funded successfully on Kickstarter March of 2018 and is now available for purchase.
